How to NOT hunt Morel Mushrooms!

by mike.schoby, April 28, 2011, 11:32AM

I know, I know…the main reason any of us go to Africa is for the hunting, but if you go there is a whole host of other things to see and do. You only have so much time, so here is my Reader’s Digest version of the top three “Must Do” things before or after a hunting trip in Zimbabwe, Zambia and Botswana.

4/21/11, Cape Town South Africa....

Finally back to somewhere with some decent internet connectivity. You don’t realize how dependant we are to being connected to the inteweb until you have to go without it for awhile. Want to get online in Zimbabwe, Zambia or lots and lots of South Africa? Forget about it! Oh its technically possible, but so slow you will pull out your hair waiting. Here is a typical email session.

I have officially lost track of time. The days have blurred together and we find ourselves back in Windhoek where I am renting a car to self-drive to the coast.

Africa is a special place. The first time I set foot on the continent it captivated me. It still has the same effect today. From the wide eyes of my wife, Dory, I would say the vibe is working on her as well.

A major portion of going to Africa, is well, actually going to Africa. Let me tell ya, it ain’t easy, but we should be thankful, it wasn’t that long ago the trip in itself was a costly, time-consuming adventure that few could afford. Imaging taking a couple of weeks off work and spending thousands of dollars just to get across the Atlantic (one way) figure in the return trip and getting in country to the actual hunting destination and the better part of a month and a half was spent just getting there.

Is it possible to plan a Do It Yourself African Safari?  I thought so (not sure if I’m right yet) and set out to do just that.  I’ve found it’s not been nearly as easy as booking a couple of weeks with one outfitter, but if you believe the planning and the journey are as much of the trip, as the trip itself, then its well worth the effort.

The Kick Off to Petersen's National Man Day. Beer, and deer for breakfast!

by mike.schoby, March 15, 2011, 5:08PM

In the April issue of Petersen's Hunting my Letter From The Editor article was titled, "Is QDM Ruining Hunting?"

The basic premise of the article is that any deer is a trophy and we are losing sight of that and consequently losing sight of why we hunt.  I related stories of hunts I had been on where people were ashamed to shoot a certain deer, forbade from shooting other deer and often second guessed themselves after they actually shot a deer.
