You might think money would top the list, but the reason most often given by my clients for passing on a hunt is their inability to be off the grid long enough to go. All too often, the jobs and business that provide the requisite funds to go on those expensive hunting trips come at the expense of freedom. Fortunately, modern communications tools like satellite phones and cell phones with internet and e-mail capabilities make getting away a whole lot easier.

A nice bed is way better than waiting in the terminalI’ve been traveling for three days now, from Houston to D.C. to New York for a business meeting and then a one-night layover before the 15-hour flight from JFK to Africa. I was 3 ½ hours into a blissful, Ambien-fueled slumber when the flight attendant decided to wake me up to see if I wanted a snack.

I travel 180-200 days a year, on average. I’ve had my share of speed bumps along the way, but I adapted, overcame, and didn’t let a few delays or a temporarily misplaced bag ruin my trip. Consequently, I've never had a true travel-related disaster in all my years of travel.

If you travel with guns, you should keep Mossy Oak’s Pocket Gunsmithing Tool in your gun case. The handy device is about the size of a multi-tool but way more useful if something goes awry with your favorite rifle far from home. The tool has a pin punch; a choke tube wrench; a scope adjustment blade; Torx and Allen hex drivers to fit most common scope mounts; a magnetic 3/16-inch driver with bits; and an enclosed, magnetic storage block with an access door.

I've been booking hunts for 16 years, 13 of them full-time. In that time, I've seen hunts cancelled for all kinds of reasons. Divorce, a death in the family, and job layoffs are the most common calamities, but life has a quiver full of tricks with which to derail even the best laid plans without a modicum of mercy.
